Question Answered – Binding and Non Binding Estimates Very Tricky Business

By Moving Blogger

The Question:  Let’s say that you called 2 moving companies or got 2 moving quotes from moving companies website for moving 2 bedroom apartment from Los Angeles California to New York New York. The first moving company gave you an estimate for move weight of 3000 pounds and the price per pound is $0.60 total estimate is $1800 . The second moving company told you that the move weight is about 2700 pounds and they have a minimum of $1000 for the first 1500 pound and each additional pound is $0.57 per pound total estimate is $1684 . Which moving estimate will you choose?

My Answer:  First you need to get more moving estimates and more information. You need to know what is the weight of your household goods. Ask from the moving companies to send you the list of your items with the weight calculation. After getting more information you can go to the next step.

Let’s say that you called a third moving company a they sent you an estimate of 2900 Lbs and let’s assume that their price per pound was very high and you don’t even consider them as an option. The 3 estimates gave you a weight that is between 2700 Lbs and 3000 Lbs. Next step is to take the first and the second moving estimates and adjust their price to few sizes of  move (Please read the article until it ends before starting and trying to calculate your cost of move): 2300 Lbs, 2700 Lbs, 2800 Lbs, 2900 Lbs 3000 Lbs and 3400 Lbs . We are choosing 6 different move weights because it’s very hard to know the exact weight of your belonging, it can be more or less than the 3 estimates. Now after you are ready to calculate  the price per pound with the 6 move weights i will suggest you to stop and call the movers. Don’t try to calculate your cost of move by the estimates that you have now call the moving companies and ask them how much will you pay for each move weight. Even ask for 6 different estimates for your move, because usually the price per pound is changing from one moving company to the other if you have more or less weight. Tip: If the sells person from the moving company that you call will tell you “don’t worry it’s going to be O.K you don’t need few moving estimates”  - You need to start to worry because probably it’s won’t be O.K

Good Luck

I was reading something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your position on it is diametrically contradicted to what I read earlier. I am still contemplating over the opposite points of view, but I’m tipped heavily toward yours. And no matter, that’s what is so great about modernized democracy and the marketplace of thoughts on-line.
