More Explanation About Post Moving Companies Must Re Weigh

March 22, 2010
By Moving Blogger

Moving companies by law must have actual weight of your household goods if you have a moving estimate that is calculated by the weight of your items. If you have moving estimate that is calculated by cubic foot or flat rate moving price the movers don’t need to have actual weight. The moving company that you hire is going to weight your household goods before they pick everything up from your house/apartment, Light Weight, and after they will load the truck with your household goods, Heavy Weight. If you think that something is wrong with the weight tickets, the weigh of your household goods looks to much, the weight tickets are not from the same date or place, you can ask the moving company to do Re-Weigh.

How Re-Weigh done?

You need to call the moving company few days before they come to your delivery address and to let them know that you want them to weight the truck again. Meet the driver in Truck Scale, Weigh Station near your house/apartment before he come to your place and do the first weight. After the moving company driver unload your household goods go with him to the truck scale or weigh station again to have a second weight ticket. Calculate the actual weigh of your belonging and let the moving company know. If there is less weight they need to give you money back if there is more weight they will ask you to pay more.

Good Luck

What is this actual law and is it state or federal? I just got scammed by a moving company, and they refused to weigh the truck after the unload, they just took off. How do I go after them?

  12. Moving Blogger on May 26, 2010 at 8:05 am

    Hi Chris,

The actual law is federal, it’s the U.S. Department of Transportation Law. If you closed with the moving company on moving estimate that is going by weigh they have to weigh the truck if you request them to do so. You say that they unload the truck, i can understand from that the move is done. Usually they weigh the truck before they unload. I am not a lawyer and i can not give you a legal advise. Probably the best thing for you to do is first to call the U.S. Department of Transportation, the telephone numbers for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration are 202-366-2960 and 202-366-9999 second is to ask a lawyer what to do in this case.

Please let me know if you need more help.

Many unethical moving companies ask you for additional amounts at the time of moving for extra wight. To avoid this situation make sure to weight all your belongings before going for the move with them. Once the packing is done keep your eyes open over their weighing process of your belongings.
